LAMBcast #152: Ask the LAMB (audio version)

*ahem*

If you got a problem, yo, we'll solve it.

That's basically the motto for the Ask the LAMB feature here, a segment that finds its host Jason Soto alternately begging for fun/interesting questions from LAMB members and (eventually) just trolling Yahoo Answers for the truly insane questions. It's been a personal favorite feature of mine on the site, as it can bring some seriously credible answers from a wide variety of film bloggers. It can also bring some seriously funny answers. Occasionally, it does both.

And so, Jason thought it might be fun to do an audio version. As such, you'll find that both the questions and the answers leaned more towards the silly, but it's fair to say that it definitely made for one of the funnier shows from start to finish that we've seen on the LAMBcast. Joining him was Nolahn, Nick, Lackey, and Dylan.

Also on tap:

* Rants and Raves of the Week
* Name That Film Times Five

A few notes:

* The show can be found, of course, via iTunes - just do a search for "LAMBcast." Also, I always post a link to the show on the LAMBcast's Facebook page, and there's a player there if you'd like to listen online. The direct RSS feed is: http://lambcast.podomatic.com/rss2.xml

* Shows will eventually make their way to the LAMBcast Archives. If you'd ever like to catch up on back episodes, go there.

* If you're interested, you too can be a LAMBcaster - we love new blood! So joining the LAMBcast will be The Film Pasture, a new show dedicated to exploring the world of film and film blogging through the eyes of you, the writers. Each week, we will explore one or more topics through a series of interviews and discussions with members of the LAMB.

With over 40,000 attendees, you know there was bound to be at least a few LAMBs there. We talk to Shala Thomas from Life Between Films about her Sundance experiences: how she approaches the fest, where to go and (of course) what her favorite films were.

Lindsay, Jessica, Nick, Justin, and Dylan gathered round the campfire to rattle off their Top 5 films of 2012, and it's an epic. As if that weren't enough, we even threw in some special awards for key films/scenes/actors/etc. It's a fun show that covers a surprisingly wide array of films...made even wider with Nick's compulsion to name every honorable mention in his list of 400 films seen this year. Ok, maybe not.
Also, Joel asked me to include everyone's linked lists of Top 10s that were posted over at the LAMB Forums, so here goes:
* Two Tickets For - Sara and Andrew
* Surrender to the Void
* Flixchatter
* Lord of the Films
* Go See Talk - Marc, Andrew, Jessica, Grady
* Benend's Basement
* The Velvet Cafe
* Public Transportation Snob
* Xmarksthespot - Karl and Vicki
* Myfilmviews
* SNG Movie Thoughts
* The Cinematic Spectacle
Also on tap:
* Rants and Raves of the Week * Name That Film Times Five
A few notes:
* The show can be found, of course, via iTunes - just do a search for "LAMBcast." Also, I always post a link to the show on the LAMBcast's Facebook page, and there's a player there if you'd like to listen online. The direct RSS feed is: http://lambcast.podomatic.com/rss2.xml
* Shows will eventually make their way to the LAMBcast Archives. If you'd ever like to catch up on back episodes, go there.
* If you're interested, you too can be a LAMBcaster - we love new blood! For more information on the LAMBcast, check out the topic at the LAMB Forums. Music provided royalty-free by Kevin MacLeod's Incompetech website. Big thanks to Kevin for providing this service. Opening song by Cake. The LAMBcast loves feedback, too - if you'd like yours read on a future show, leave it in the comments section at the LAMB. Please visit and like our Facebook page, and finally, we're on iTunes, and would still love a review, even if it's a bad one.

MOTM/LAMBcast #149: Night of the Comet

The Princess Bride? Watchmen? Dawn of the Dead? Big films, you might say? Night of the Comet can't hear you. Kristen chose this barely-seen apocalyptic zombie sci-fi-comedy and it tore up the competition. The question is, is it underseen/underloved or justly forgotten?
Before we get to the links, here's the IMDb summary for the film, for those that aren't familiar with it:

"Two pretty high school girls (one a cheerleader!) don't like their stepmother or her new boyfriend ("Daddy would have gotten us Uzis!"). One morning, they wake up to find that everybody in Los Angeles has been turned to dust by a Comet except them, a guy who looks like Erik Estrada, some zombies and the occupants of a secret underground government installation. "

Now, let's see what your fellow LAMBs had to say about it. Thanks to all of the LAMBs that sent in their posts for this edition of the MOTM.

* Silver Emulsion Film Reviews
As we do every month, the LAMBcast is tied in with the MOTM. This time around, as mentioned, Kristen hosted the MOTM segment, and was joined by Nick, Todd, Bubbawheat, and Dylan.

LAMBcast #148: Actor Career Draft - Tom Hanks

One thing I can say for sure is that, despite starring in fewer films overall (and I'm probably stating the obvious here), Hanks' career - or at least 30 films' worth of it - is vastly better than that of our last draft subject, Bruce Willis. In that draft, I think the participants were cursing the available choices come the fourth round or so, but I think it's fair to say that most of us wouldn't mind (all that much) watching any given film from even the sixth round of Hanks' career.

Now entering the studio are today's contestants...

First up is the five-time champion, from Man, I Love Films...Dylan Fields. Dylan like long walks in a mall and dining at Red Lobster. He one day dreams of flying into a tree. Our first challenger is Jason (Jay in LAMBcast world) Cluitt of Life Vs. Film. Jay takes pictures of squirrels in his spare time and once ate an entire watermelon in two bites. Finally, we have the man known to his friends as Sir Donkey Sex, Mr. Nick Powell of The Cinematic Katzenjammer. Nick has a poster of Dylan on his wall that he throws darts at while watching the films of Nic Cage.

Finally, we have our host, Kai Parker, also of Man, I Love Films. Kai is getting so good at hosting this that his hair is curling up a bit and his mustache is coming in grey. He also has nightmares where a man dressed like Sean Connery shakes him and screams "Therapists!!" at him.

Anyway, enough silliness. Will Nick or Jay kick Dylan out of the champ's chair? You gotta listen and find out!

LAMBpardy episopdes are a semi-regular feature of the LAMBcast, so if you'd like to be a player in the future, keep an eye out over at the Forums, as demand is high and there's a max of three contestants per show (and one of them is the returning champ).

LAMBcast #146: Franchise Look-back: A Nightmare on Elm Street

From our humble beginnings with Alien and Jurassic Park, we've grown to cover six films with the last look-back in Rocky, and now a whopping seven films (which could have potentially been nine had I not capped us at New Nightmare) with an in-depth look at the Elm Street series. In other words, don't count on seeing Friday the 13th or the James Bond series being looked at anytime soon.

This time around, Nick, Dylan, Pat, Jason and first-time LAMBcaster Marc gathered to dissect Freddy Krueger in all his forms - his high points, low points, best and worst kills, place in horror history and, of course, just how terrible Freddy's Dead is.

Note: please accept my apologies for my loud and nasty coughing that pops up a few times during the show. I muted myself so the show participants couldn't hear it, but my mic still picked it up and I couldn't edit it out.

MOTM/LAMBcast #145: Children of Men

They say the sixth time's the charm, right? Proof that perseverance pays off, Ryan Fernand of Lord of the Films submitted Children of Men to the MOTM poll once again for December and it finally paid off. Then, after all that time, it wasn't even close, as his choice had more than twice as many votes as the next closest film. The 2006 sci-fi drama starring Clive Owen was pretty much universally loved by critics and movie buffs upon its release, but never caught on much with the general public (at least not at the box office) - a subject sure to come up on the accompanying LAMBcast for the film.

Before we get to the links, here's the IMDb summary for the film, for those that aren't familiar with it:

"The world's youngest citizen has just died at 18, and humankind is facing the likelihood of its own extinction. Set in and around a dystopian London fractious with violence and warring nationalistic sects, Children of Men follows the unexpected discovery of a lone pregnant woman and the desperate journey to deliver her to safety and restore faith for a future beyond those presently on Earth. "

Now, let's see what your fellow LAMBs had to say about it. Thanks to all of the LAMBs that sent in their posts for this edition of the MOTM.

It's also time to vote on next month's movie. Once again, I put out the call for MOTM Champions. The gist is this: I ask for volunteers - people to select a film to be placed on the poll (up to 10 per month, as usual), then promote it on their site, Facebook, Twitter, whatever. Should their film win, they are guaranteed a spot on the LAMBcast episode where we will discuss said film. As a bonus (?), they will also get to host that segment of the show.

This month, we have five potential Champions - the sites are listed along with the films in the poll in the sidebar. You have one week to vote (and promote your movies!). I'll be putting out the call for the next MOTM in a few weeks, so stay tuned.

As we do every month, the LAMBcast is tied in with the MOTM. This time around, as mentioned, Ryan hosted the MOTM segment, and was joined by Dan, Lindsay, and Justin.

Doing so turned out to be harder than anticipated, however, as a number of cancellations and/or unavailable parties dwindled the number of players (excluding me, as I chose to solely play host) went from six to three. Nevertheless, it was still a battle, featuring three of the best out there in Stevee, Rachel, and Sebastian.
